The Roll-Call: the Ritual that unites the CIB every morning

At the Culinary Institute of Barcelona (CIB), every morning starts with an event that is far more than just a routine gathering. We call it the Roll-Call, and it stands as one of our most treasured rituals—a ceremony infused with energy, connection, and purpose. Taking place promptly at 7:50 a.m., this daily tradition sets the tone for the day, embodying our commitment to building strong teams composed of individuals who truly grasp the value of collaboration.

What is the Roll-Call?

The Roll-Call is not optional. It is a brief but mandatory meeting for everyone: students, faculty, and available school staff. In just five minutes, we achieve something far beyond mere coordination: we nurture a shared spirit that makes every member of the CIB feel part of something greater. How do we do it? Through a process that blends dynamism, humor, practical information, and a dash of inspiration that prepares everyone to tackle the day ahead with enthusiasm and determination.

The Roll-Call kicks off with an unmistakable sound: a guitar riff that captures everyone’s attention and signals the beginning of the event. This seemingly small detail perfectly reflects the essence of the CIB: we are unique, vibrant, and steadfast in our belief that even the simplest moments can transform into unforgettable experiences.

Each week, a tenured professor steps into the role of master of ceremonies. With microphone in hand, they guide the sequence of events with humor, energy, and a personal touch that makes every Roll-Call unique. The first part of the meeting is dedicated to sharing the day’s agenda. This not only keeps everyone informed about the institute’s activities—which are always buzzing with life, thanks to the many programs and projects running simultaneously—but also sparks mutual curiosity and engagement. By staying in tune with everything happening across the institute, our students and faculty feel part of a vibrant community where learning extends beyond the boundaries of their specific programs.

Following this overview of the day, specific roles and tasks are assigned as needed. While practical, this moment carries deeper significance: it reinforces the idea that every member of the CIB has a place, a purpose, and an essential role in the daily operations of our community. Finally, if there are any issues or incidents requiring attention, they are addressed openly and transparently, emphasizing the value of clear and effective communication.

The Roll-Call concludes with the same energy it began. With applause, rallying cries, and an outburst of collective enthusiasm, everyone leaves ready to embrace the day ahead. This final moment embodies something fundamental to us: the spirit of unity and the power of beginning together.

Why do we do the Roll-Call?

The Roll-Call is not a simple administrative act. It reflects the values that define the CIB and underscores our unwavering commitment to building cohesive, efficient teams. This daily ritual serves multiple purposes and offers a range of benefits, making it a cornerstone of our methodology.

Bringing the CIB community togetherThe CIB is always a hub of activity, with hands-on classes, workshops, events, and collaborative projects happening simultaneously. Roll-Call acts as a unifying moment, bringing everyone together regardless of their program or focus. This daily connection fosters a strong sense of belonging, reminding each member that they are part of something larger than themselves.

Fostering teamworkTeamwork is one of the most valuable skills for a chef—or any professional—to cultivate. At the CIB, we believe that learning to collaborate effectively is just as essential as mastering culinary techniques. Roll-Call provides a daily opportunity to practice this skill by assigning roles, solving problems, and working together to tackle the challenges of the day.

Promoting transparency and trustOpen and honest communication is the key of any successful team. By sharing updates on the institute’s activities and addressing issues transparently, Roll-Call helps to strengthen trust among the members of our community.

Promoting leadershipBy rotating the role of emcee among the faculty, we exemplify an inclusive and adaptive style of leadership. This approach teaches our students that true leadership is not about exercising authority but about serving others and keeping the team aligned toward a shared goal.

Preparing for changeIn today’s ever-evolving world, flexibility and adaptability are indispensable. Roll-Call, with its dynamic structure and emphasis on communication and problem-solving, equips our students to face any challenge with confidence and creativity.

Roll-Call is more than just a way to organize our day—it shapes our culture. It serves as a daily reminder of the values that define us: community, collaboration, leadership, and adaptability. This simple yet powerful act strengthens the bonds between students and faculty, setting the tone for the day ahead.

For our students, the impact is profound. They feel connected, supported, and empowered to contribute not only to their own success but also to the success of the entire CIB community. They know they are never alone—they are part of a team that values their efforts and celebrates their achievements.

For us as educators, Roll-Call is a chance to show that education goes beyond academics—it’s an emotional and experiential journey. It’s a way to practice what we teach: that great chefs—and great leaders—are not only shaped in the kitchen but in shared moments, collective challenges, and the values we live every day.

The Roll-Call is more than a ritual; it is a declaration of purpose. It reflects our commitment to shaping not only culinary professionals but also individuals who can lead, collaborate, and adapt to the ever-changing world that lies ahead. In those five short minutes each morning, we plant the seeds of a culture that inspires, unites, and transforms.

And so, every morning, with a guitar riff and an unmatched sense of energy, we embark on a new day together at the CIB. Because here, at our institute, every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and create something extraordinary—together.
